It's a Dickensian picture about a world rarely, if ever, seen in mainstream movies, a film that grabs us from the opening frame and doesn't let go until the credits roll at the end. Fortunately Indians are turning it down. When Jamal finds Latika at Javed's house, the innocence of her childhood has been replaced with a bitter and sorrowful cynicism. And Boyle's placement of subtitles on the screen makes such good sense! They are things of beauty, works of art that make me fall in love with movies all over again. Jamal's final question is the name of the third musketeer in The Three Musketeers, which he never learned. Please do not let that dissuade you from seeing this marvelous film. Jamal nevertheless promises to wait for her every day at five o'clock at the station.
It is thus up to Jamal to maintain a sense of hope about their love, and he exhibits his same steadfast belief in the inevitability of their connection.
