But it strikes me as an inconsistency in my makeup. He provides interesting and often quirky stories of the lives and deaths of thought-provoking philosophers from Socrates, who chose to die by hemlock poisoning rather than live on without the freedom to think for himself, to Peter Singer, who asks the disquieting philosophical and ethical questions that haunt our own times. Delving into these provocative topics and more, Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue distills hundreds of years of fascinating lore into one lively history. Nothing too deep on any one philosopher's work, but that is not the point.

I have fallen in love with this little book, and now I have to hurry up and find a way to include it in my classes. It covers Sartre, de Beauvoir and Camus. I hope Nigel Warburton makes more of these books. How would looking at the full span of time change the way we perceive the universe, the earth, and our very existence? I've heard nearly all of the their names, but really I never had a clear concept of the ideas of the major western philosophers, until I listened to this book.

In a remarkably easy-to-listen-to style, the author presents a neat, somewhat superficial but pithy summary of arguably the 40 most important and influential western philosophers in modern history. Ben yoğun bir eğlence düzenleyemedim. Starting chronologically from Socrates to the present day, it charts all of the most notable philosophers and their various ideas. As other reviews have said, this Little History is a compact yet comprehensive survey, well written and engagingly read.

These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. Is she a philosopher who belongs in the company of Aristotle and Kant? The chapters are organized chronologically, from Ancient Greek philosophers, like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, to modern days thinkers like Alan Turing and Hannah Arendt. In about 300 pages, Gombrich relayed just about every event of significance in world history in an erudite, extraordinarily humane way. In forty brief chapters, Nigel Warburton guides us on a chronological tour of the major ideas in the history of philosophy. This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it. In a book this short with so many authors covered, one cannot expect too much. This is prepping me before reading actual works by some of the philosophers.

The answers they uncovered still hold the key to how we understand the world. Who was your favorite character and why? He is an Honorary Associate Research Fellow of the Institute of Philosophy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. He then moves on, chronologically, devoting chapters to Machiavelli, Hobbes, Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, as well as Darwin and William James who I consider to be more like scientists though I guess that scientists are in some sense philosophers.

Illuminating, informative and most of all enjoyable. His unwillingness to accept assumptions, and his passion for discovering the truth or, failing that, how little he knew, provide a model for all philosophers. However, don't expect too much of deep philosophical discussions since it's not the goal of this book as the title suggests. A Little History of Philosophy tries to accomplish its task by breaking the development of philosophy up into 40 chapters, each focused on one or two philosophers. In forty brief chapters, Nigel Warburton guides us on a chronological tour of the major ideas in the history of philosophy.

Taking listeners all the way back to the philosophers of ancient Greece and working his way through the most notable philosophers in history, hear the fascinating topics that have been discussed over the course of time and see the parallels between them — for at its core, philosophy is an attempt to answer those fundamental questions - who are we? I had studided briefly some philosophy in college, but forgotten most of it, and wanted an overview the major people and ideas. It would be impossible for anyone to write a book of this length talking about every major theme on the subject in detail. How does this one compare? Brevity necessitates a focus on just one or two aspects of any philosopher. Warburton notes some of these literary quirks but does not connect them to what each philosopher managed to accomplish.

No one but you can decide what you make of your life. From Socrates and Plato through to Peter Singer, he introduces the person, his key ideas and contributions to thought, and how others received his or her ideas. The author also devotes chapters to some modern scholars such as Bertrand Russell, Wittgenstein, Turing, and Peter Singer who is still trying to poke the world with his version of utilitarianism. By that criterion, the philosopher who historically and argumentatively followed Bertrand Russell is Wittgenstein, who studied with Russell and whose Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus demolished Russell's views—much to the latter's despair.

This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it. Ayer was interesting, and Russell was brilliant. But you are responsible for wanting to do that thing, for trying to do it, and for how you respond to your failure to be able to do it. Apropos of philosophy acted out in history, we know what that kind of thinking made possible in the 20th Century. I never thought you could talk about more than forty different philosophers in such a short space.
